HARDMUT II: Hardware and Multimedia Technology for the Development of a Mobile Jewish Museum
A Cooperation Project with the European School of Management and Technology, Berlin, Sponsored by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)
Since 2007, the Jewish Museum Berlin has been on the road throughout the Federal Republic, conveying German-Jewish history to school pupils betweenthe ages of 10 and 19. The cooperation project ties in with the successful museum education program “on.tour – The JMB Tours Schools.” Computer scientists, multimedia designers, exhibition designers, Jewish studies scholars, and cultural experts are working together on the conception and development of program elements and modules for a museum program outside the museum. The objective is to make the thematic diversity at the Jewish Museum Berlin available to many more people and to encourage an openness in young people – through their active involvement with the content – for encounters and exchange.
The project began on 1 November 2008 and will end on 31 August 2012.
POSEIDON: Position and Context-sensitive Information Systems for Museums to Demonstrate the Potential of RFID Technology
A Cooperation Project with the European School of Management and Technology Berlin, the Humboldt University of Berlin, Acousticguide Berlin, and Bitmanufaktur Berlin Sponsored by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)
This cooperation project provides the framework for researching and implementing RFID technology in museums. RFID technology stands for Radio Frequency Identification Technology and was first employed in the field of logistics. It enables the transfer of a limited amount of data via radio frequency within a close range of up to 30 meters. New forms of interaction between visitors and museum exhibits are made possible through this technology, as is a cross-linking of objects, multimedia applications, and the internet. Consider, for example, a guide in the exhibition interacting with on-site media terminals or other guide users, informing visitors of the exhibits in their immediate vicinity and processing the information to create a personalized website on the Museum visit. The interdisciplinary Poseidon Team, made up of Jewish studies scholars, historians, designers, and computer scientists, is designing, testing, and implementing these application scenarios.
The project began on 1 January 2009 and will end in August 2012.
Diversity in Schools
The project "Diversity in Schools" aims to develop innovative and transferable approaches and methods for education work in schools to promote an open, respectful, and community-oriented school culture.
During the three-year project with three secondary schools in Berlin, modules for cultural and historico-political education will be developed by teachers. These modules will be based on the questions and practical needs of teachers and with them appropriate, modern approaches and content will be integrated into school life. The content of the modules will cover cultural education, the teaching of history and migration, and handling stereotypical representations in school textbooks. Moreover, the teachers’ intercultural and diversity skills are deepened during the training and their media skills expanded. In parallel, the management and the teaching staff will be advised on the school development process and given ongoing support for fostering intercultural awareness in school. The project is held in coordination with the education authority with the aim of making the experiences and results available to other schools.
Diversity in schools is a project organized by the Jewish Museum Berlin in cooperation with the German Children and Youth Foundation funded by the Mercator Foundation.
The project began on 1 February 2012 and will end in January 2015.
